GEM Avocado

GEM Avocado, NOT G.E.M. Gloria Tang Sze-wing, the hot singer 😂
Hass is the King of Avocado, GEM is the princesses of avocado (great-granddaughter). The GEM variety was developed by University of California Riverside researchers and named after a technician that help developing it, initials of Gray E. Martin. The new variety actually was patented and released in 2003.

Lots of reference shall be made in comparison to Hass as GEM was develop to be better / differentiate / fill in the void.

The Gem avocado tree is a semi-compact, vase shaped tree that bears the fruit mostly in clusters interior in the tree, GEM is also a more consistent producer. Gem avocados hold particularly well on the tree.

GEM has several of the positive attributes of Hass, including taste, size, color, productivity and seasonality, also matures later than Hass thus extending the season. GEM is described as "a little more oval or egg-shaped than Hass. It has the speckling on the skin. As it ripens, it will turn dark, and a lot of times the speckled lenticels will get a golden color speckle to it." This lenticels is actually pores through which gases are exchanged.

In taste tests conducted by Westfalia Fruit Estates, a South African company marketing GEM worldwide, the avocado variety scored better than Hass in terms of eating quality. Other surveys shows that it's as good as/ even better than Hass. Retail markets varies and in EU & US selling price is at premium compared to Hass due to the lower planted acreage.

A very promising variety of avocado for commercial planting.

Bunga Kantan

Bunga Kantan, known as Tourch Ginger is the most beautiful, wild and edible flower in the rainforest of Malaysia.

Now it's no longer wild as it's being planted. Bunga Kantan is from the Ginger family.

The flowers of the torch ginger are produced in an interesting way. The ‘inflorescence’ or complete flower-head of the plant rises from beneath the ground like a spear. From the striking resemblance to a flaming torch, it is not difficult to see how this common ginger got its name. Here, the torch ginger is more popularly known beyond its ornamental value.

The young flowering shoot (bud) of the torch ginger is an important ingredient for the rojak and laksa, which are quintessential dishes of Malaysia and Singapore. The bud is finely chopped, mixed and used as a dressing and its aroma gives that rojak or Asian salad a distinctive flavor, masking the smell of the dark pasty prawn base.

Hass Avocado

Hass Avocado, need no introduction. It's the King of Avocado. 95% of the global commercially planted Avocado is Hass.

Hass had some other big advantages over other avocado. The trees grow vigorously, are easy to propagate and produce an impressive amount of fruit by only the second or third season. They have a longer harvest season than other avocados and, perhaps most importantly, the Hass's thicker skin makes it superior to handle and ship long distances.

Hass avocados have a pebbly skin that ripens from green to deep purple or nearly black, and they can vary in size from 140 gm to 340 gm. Although the skin is thick, it is relatively easy to peel. The flesh closest to the skin is pale green, and as it nears the medium-sized central stone it develops a yellow undertone. The flesh is soft, creamy, and barely fibrous, with good oil content. The flavor is rich and nutty with a slightly sweet finish.

The Hass avocado tree is a desirable fast-growing tree that produces high-quality, rough-skinned fruit with a long shelf life. Hass avocado trees are medium, spreading, evergreen trees that reaches 12 M in height and 11 M wide.

Series on Avocado in Malaysia, Reed Avocado

Doing a series on Avocado. Starting with Reed, which we had sold out. Not to worry, we are expecting another batch May/June. Would recommend pre-booking 🤪

Reed Avocado is described as Reed Avocado, Hass's Rounder and Creamier Cousin.
First question normally being asked, how's the taste? It's rated as Excellent!
Bill Sidnam of the Los Angeles Times characterizes it as "an incredibly rich, buttery flavor.". The texture is buttery, and the flavor is bold, rich and nutty.
The Reed avocado is one of the larger known varieties of avocado. The round fruit can weigh up to 600 gm!. Its thick, green, slightly pebbled skin is easy to peel, and its flesh is a pale golden-yellow. It has a relatively large seed and seed cavity, but its robust size allows it to still carry a substantial amount of edible flesh.
Second question, how tall is the tree?
Left to nature, it can grow to about 12 M. For Home growers, Reed can be prune down to 2.5 M and still be a good producer. Reed avocado trees are slender and upright.

What is the disadvantage? Reed ripe in Green so it's a bit difficult to tell when it's ripe 😁. Shelve life is short, about 5 days after plucking, but can be extended much longer by refrigerating. Reed store very well in refrigeration, even when cut. For better storage, leave the pit in.
One way to check ripeness is to lightly flick the piece of stem at the end of the fruit. If it falls out, the fruit is ripe. You can double check by pushing a toothpick into the cavity where the stem flicked out. If it goes in without much resistance, the fruit is ripe. Another way is to squeeze the fruit gently. An unripe fruit is hard, a ripe fruit has a little bit of 'give'.

Place your pre-order Now! Currently @ $180.00 Pre-Booking deposit of $50.00 only. ETA May/June. Kindly whatsApp me https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=60163261829&text=I%27m+interested+in+Avocado&fbclid=IwAR3Ip-0rNXNSyC38Xf2wP98u4IsKb_e79_bQPRkRVNNQTKjWPVg3EdfDXU8

Sustainable Swiftlet Farming

Sustainable Swiftlet Farming, by Benjamin Chai

Swiftlet Workshop Video

Check out the Swiftlet Farming workshop, organized by a friend in Papar, Sabah.

Malaysia is still new in this industry compare with Indonesia. This industry started in Malaysia back in the 1990’s where forest fire occurred at Indonesia which has created a golden opportunity for Malaysia. The incident has led millions of swiftlet migrating to Malaysia. Thus our journey started.

ALL businesses are built on blood, sweat and tears, at least in the figurative sense. But one industry thrives on another bodily fluid – saliva. Bird saliva, that is. And not just any bird. It has to be the swiftlet, whose nests of hardened spit have been a delicacy treasured by the Chinese for centuries.

Depending on the quality, marketplace and timing, a kilogramme of unprocessed edible bird nest can fetch a few thousand ringgit.

The processing, a tedious and labour-intensive affair, typically doubles the value of the nests. Quoting a senior Sabah government official, a news report early last month says bird nest is sold at RM4,000 to RM18,000 per kg.

The global market is said to be worth billions of ringgit. Thanks to its head start of 20 years or so in swiftlet farming on a commercial scale, Indonesia supplies 70% to 80% of the bird nests consumed worldwide, mainly in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Macau, Singapore and North America.

Paulownia Trees in Malaysia

Paulownia – also called the kiri tree, princess tree or empress treeis a genus of six to 17 species of flowering plants in the family Paulowniaceae, related to and sometimes included in the Scrophulariaceae. They are present in much of China, south to northern Laos and Vietnam and are long cultivated elsewhere in eastern Asia, notably in Japan and Korea.

Why Paulownia in Malaysia?
From a commercialization prospect, we are still identifying the potential, such as market pricing of Paulownia Lumber in Malaysia. Our trial plot shall also provide us with accurate data, such as survival rate, growth rate, time to harvest, Bo-Mass production and etc. Most importantly is ROI. We are contacting buyers for Paulownia. Shall share more with you as we progress.

From a CSR prospect,
Paulownia is a fast growing tree that can help clean up our environment. They absorb heavy metals
and harmful substances, where other trees would not survive. Absorbing these substances, it relieves the earth from them.

Paulownia helps for remedying the fragile soils, which otherwise would perish and be lost completely.
The huge leaves of Paulownia reach 50-70 cm in diameter. After falling they not only fertilize, but also restructure the soil with natural humus. In this way, they ensure the necessary conditions for the growth of the species grown jointly with Paulownia and after.

Paulownia is a preferred tree species also in fighting erosion. Besides purifying the soil and the waters in it, Paulownia clears the air of harmful gases, which are often in unacceptably high concentrations, especially in the large industrial cities. Paulownia absorbs 10 times more CO2 than any other tree species, releasing large quantities of O2.
Human activity, the power industry, the huge traffic etc. bring about the fast accumulation of CO2 in the air, which in turn leads to global warming.

With the planting of 5 acres of new areas with Paulownia, the absorption of 13 tons of CO2 from the air per year is ensured. With our new planting in Bandar Baru Bangi, we are actually creating an Oxygen generator. Our farm shall be greener than Green! This shall greatly reduce our carbon foot print from the Bangi Golf Resort Hotel down to the Bangi Farm Resort. We hope to finish off the planting by 3rd quarter 2019.

In short, Paulownia improves the soil, controls the pollution of subsoil waters with heavy metals, chemicals and animal waste polutants, controls erosion, serves as shelter and barrier from the sun and winds, purifies the air from pollutants and releases large quantities of O2. Not least is the importance of Paulownia for the enrichment of the landscape and the biological diversity of Bandar Baru Bangi.
Here are 6 reasons why you should head for Bangi Farm Resort and spend time in our Paulownia farm as the fresh air improve your wellbeing:

1) Fresh air is good for your digestive system
Fresh air increases the flow of oxygen helping you digest food more effectively so this will particularly help if you are trying to lose weight.

2) Fresh air helps improve blood pressure and heart rate
Avoid polluted environments particularly if you need to improve your blood pressure.
3) Fresh air makes you happier
The more fresh air you get, the more oxygen you will breathe which will increase the amount of serotonin (the happy hormone) you inhale, consequently making you happier.

4) Fresh air strengthens your immune system
By increasing the amount of fresh air we get, will increase the amount of oxygen which helps our white blood cells function properly by fighting and killing bacteria and germs.

5) Fresh air cleans your lungs
You lungs dilate more from having an increase of oxygen so fresh air improves the cleansing of your lungs. You release airborne toxins from your body when exhaling through your lungs.

6) Fresh air gives you more energy and a sharper mind
You may have noticed after spending time outside, you come back indoors feeling brighter and perhaps ready to get back to work. More oxygen results in greater brain functioning, improving your concentration skills and providing you with more energy.

See you soon @ Bangi Farm Resort  or like us on FaceBook.

We had just managed to plant 3 rows, and there's plenty more to go.

It's turning woody !
