Changing the Landscape & Economy with Paulownia.

The transformation of Lankao County into a center for musical instrument manufacturing, primarily due to the abundance of paulownia trees. Changing the landscape and changing the economy. These trees, known for their suitability in making musical instruments, have been pivotal in the county's economic development. Historically, Lankao faced environmental challenges like floods and sandstorms, leading to poor soil quality and crop failures. In the 1960s, local initiatives encouraged planting paulownia trees to improve soil conditions and conserve water. By the 1980s, these trees became a key resource for crafting furniture and traditional Chinese musical instruments. Today, Lankao boasts over 200 musical instrument workshops, with their products reaching both domestic and international markets.

Grapes, grapes and grapes.

Feeling ecstatic starting on my journey into grapes. Was talking to a few friends and yes, team up to start a grape farm, here in Selangor, Malaysia.

Currently starting off with some cuttings and a couple of rooted plants. Plan to start off a small area, about 24 plants as mother tree. These shall contribute scions for future grafting. Currently already have Isabella, IAC, Jupiter and Dixon in hand. Would like to increase the varieties and see which perform best in lowland. I can still recalled that I killed 2 grapes plants before so am treating this with more caution.

My strategy is to establish a small size plot of mother tree. Create more planting material via cuttings for future planting. Area had been identified and work shall start pretty soon.

Grapes should be a good crop to compliment the Figs that we are currently having. In terms of marketing, it's just an add on. Production and care is pretty similar too, so our helpers should not find this too difficult.

Health benefits from Grapes are pretty high. And being a healthy fruit, it goes in line with our "Farm to Folk to Wellness" Eco-tourism concept.

This is also a good opportunity to showcase some of the products that I am an Ambassador of, such as MARDI BioRichar, BlackGold, AgroSol, BioJadi and etc. I only realized that on our packing of MARDI BioRichar there are grapes pictures on it.

Some planning of establishing the planting.

Sending some of the mother trees for dripping via fertigation.

The cuttings are very matured and can start flowering soon. Hope to get some grapes next year .

As usual, grapes are not spared from pest. Would like to minimize the use of pesticide, almost chemical free so that my wife can enjoy the grapes, just like she is enjoying our minimal chemically grown figs. (my wife is a Interstitial Cystitis patient).

Happy Grape planting,.

Hass Avocado

Hass Avocado, need no introduction. It's the King of Avocado. 95% of the global commercially planted Avocado is Hass.

Hass had some other big advantages over other avocado. The trees grow vigorously, are easy to propagate and produce an impressive amount of fruit by only the second or third season. They have a longer harvest season than other avocados and, perhaps most importantly, the Hass's thicker skin makes it superior to handle and ship long distances.

Hass avocados have a pebbly skin that ripens from green to deep purple or nearly black, and they can vary in size from 140 gm to 340 gm. Although the skin is thick, it is relatively easy to peel. The flesh closest to the skin is pale green, and as it nears the medium-sized central stone it develops a yellow undertone. The flesh is soft, creamy, and barely fibrous, with good oil content. The flavor is rich and nutty with a slightly sweet finish.

The Hass avocado tree is a desirable fast-growing tree that produces high-quality, rough-skinned fruit with a long shelf life. Hass avocado trees are medium, spreading, evergreen trees that reaches 12 M in height and 11 M wide.

Paulownia Trees in Malaysia

Paulownia – also called the kiri tree, princess tree or empress treeis a genus of six to 17 species of flowering plants in the family Paulowniaceae, related to and sometimes included in the Scrophulariaceae. They are present in much of China, south to northern Laos and Vietnam and are long cultivated elsewhere in eastern Asia, notably in Japan and Korea.

Why Paulownia in Malaysia?
From a commercialization prospect, we are still identifying the potential, such as market pricing of Paulownia Lumber in Malaysia. Our trial plot shall also provide us with accurate data, such as survival rate, growth rate, time to harvest, Bo-Mass production and etc. Most importantly is ROI. We are contacting buyers for Paulownia. Shall share more with you as we progress.

From a CSR prospect,
Paulownia is a fast growing tree that can help clean up our environment. They absorb heavy metals
and harmful substances, where other trees would not survive. Absorbing these substances, it relieves the earth from them.

Paulownia helps for remedying the fragile soils, which otherwise would perish and be lost completely.
The huge leaves of Paulownia reach 50-70 cm in diameter. After falling they not only fertilize, but also restructure the soil with natural humus. In this way, they ensure the necessary conditions for the growth of the species grown jointly with Paulownia and after.

Paulownia is a preferred tree species also in fighting erosion. Besides purifying the soil and the waters in it, Paulownia clears the air of harmful gases, which are often in unacceptably high concentrations, especially in the large industrial cities. Paulownia absorbs 10 times more CO2 than any other tree species, releasing large quantities of O2.
Human activity, the power industry, the huge traffic etc. bring about the fast accumulation of CO2 in the air, which in turn leads to global warming.

With the planting of 5 acres of new areas with Paulownia, the absorption of 13 tons of CO2 from the air per year is ensured. With our new planting in Bandar Baru Bangi, we are actually creating an Oxygen generator. Our farm shall be greener than Green! This shall greatly reduce our carbon foot print from the Bangi Golf Resort Hotel down to the Bangi Farm Resort. We hope to finish off the planting by 3rd quarter 2019.

In short, Paulownia improves the soil, controls the pollution of subsoil waters with heavy metals, chemicals and animal waste polutants, controls erosion, serves as shelter and barrier from the sun and winds, purifies the air from pollutants and releases large quantities of O2. Not least is the importance of Paulownia for the enrichment of the landscape and the biological diversity of Bandar Baru Bangi.
Here are 6 reasons why you should head for Bangi Farm Resort and spend time in our Paulownia farm as the fresh air improve your wellbeing:

1) Fresh air is good for your digestive system
Fresh air increases the flow of oxygen helping you digest food more effectively so this will particularly help if you are trying to lose weight.

2) Fresh air helps improve blood pressure and heart rate
Avoid polluted environments particularly if you need to improve your blood pressure.
3) Fresh air makes you happier
The more fresh air you get, the more oxygen you will breathe which will increase the amount of serotonin (the happy hormone) you inhale, consequently making you happier.

4) Fresh air strengthens your immune system
By increasing the amount of fresh air we get, will increase the amount of oxygen which helps our white blood cells function properly by fighting and killing bacteria and germs.

5) Fresh air cleans your lungs
You lungs dilate more from having an increase of oxygen so fresh air improves the cleansing of your lungs. You release airborne toxins from your body when exhaling through your lungs.

6) Fresh air gives you more energy and a sharper mind
You may have noticed after spending time outside, you come back indoors feeling brighter and perhaps ready to get back to work. More oxygen results in greater brain functioning, improving your concentration skills and providing you with more energy.

See you soon @ Bangi Farm Resort  or like us on FaceBook.

We had just managed to plant 3 rows, and there's plenty more to go.

It's turning woody !

Avocado, Field Grafting.

Tried grafting Avocado trees in the field. I only managed to bud graft successfully. These trial was on above 2 years old tree planted from seeds.

Approximately 2 year old Avocado tree from seed.
My purpose of field grafting is to convert these trees from seed to grafted trees, so that it can fruit earlier. Did some cleft, splice, whip, side and bud grafting.
I select branch that are good and non water shoot.

I initially prefer non bud grafting as it's growth rate are slow.
Most of the grafting failed. Was lucky on the bud graft. The main advantage of bud graft over the others is lesser prone to damage.
Avocado grafts damaged by me while inspection.
Some of these are damaged by clumsy me.
The initial Avocado bud graft.
Did more bud grafts as it seems that these looks promising.
Subsequent Avocado Bud graft. I simplified it.
Decided to have about 5 (promising) grafts per tree. If 2 were to take, then that should be good to go.
Initially used sealant as thinking that it's field work and exposure to the weather.

I simplified the bud grafting by grafting slightly off top most position.
I then grafted on a about 5 years non fruiting tree.
Advantage of grafting off center top, are water run off and lesser exposure to direct sun light.
Vertical branch are good too.
Seems that the older tree is responding faster. Started to remove the top.
Avocado bud responding.

Avocado tree before topping off.
Decided to top off the trees so as to concentrate on the new buds. Top off the grafted Avocado trees.

Avocado tree after topping off.
Just arrived BioJadi.
Shall check on them regularly and start applying fertilization as soon as it starts growing. Maybe I shall try the recently received BioJadi fertilizer on them.

Buds are growing.

Bud had took.

#Avocado field bud grafting.

In the meantime, I shall find opportunity to try cleft / side / splice grafting on field as I think these should response & grow faster.
