The Avocado Story by AvocadoBoy

 Thank you for letting me talk about my Avocado Journey. Looking back, at 2010 when I came into contact with Avocado in Sabah. I took a deeper dive into Avocado after failing in Rubber trees, prices dropped till RM $1.00 / kg. Started to plant local hybrids and Hass from seeds. Ran out of funds and have to came back to Peninsular 2016. Continued advocating Avocado while hustling for a living. Went into MLM, employment and also drove for GRAB. Went back into Agriculture with helps from friends and started being Brand Ambassador / Promoter in fertilizers and Plant Nutrient.

By the grace of God, a venue was made available for Avocado planting in Bangi. My deepest gratitude to Bangi Farm Resort.
 

The 1st Avocado tree was planted end September 2017. It was a slow start, from a Six trees Avocado farm.

We started to collect any varieties that we can lay our hands on. Local as well as imported. Took scions from friends / some bought and started grafting.

It also took us a while to sort out the soil conditions here for the trees to thrive. Lots of failures , trials and errors. These covered the whole aspects from seedlings to tree.

Fast forward, 4 years down the road, 2021
Bangi Farm Resort had been converted into an Ecco Tourism destination, covering not only plants, but live stock. Complimenting our working partners , Bangi Farm Resort is a showcase of a complete ecological system for Food security. Farm to Fork, Fork to Farm and Beyond. We had introduced the Black Soldier Fly to Up-cycle organic food waste and plug it back to our ecco-system, giving it a more Green, more Sustainable , more Cleaner and reduce our Carbon Foot print.

JumBo Hass

JumBo Hass avocado weighs from 250g-400g (size 48 to 32), equivalent to a Pinkerton avocado. The characteristics of the new avocado line is similar to Hass, with excellent quality, beautiful shape, long shelf life and a rough thick skin.

The JumBo Hass avocado variety fully converges the qualities of the Hass avocado variety but has the remarkable points in terms of weight and quality. The JumBo Hass avocado variety is an off-season avocado variety, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, to be harvested in November and December.

JumBo Hass avocados even have flowers in group A. The fruit flesh accounts for 70% of the fruit, has a creamy yellow color, has a creamy, delicious, rich taste, and easily separated skin. After picking, JumBo Hass avocados can preserve themselves in normal weather conditions for 15-20 days, coupled with the rough thick skin, just the perfect variety for export.

JumBo Hass avocado just like Hass has an off centered stalk as opposed to the center stalk of Pinkerton. Plant size is approximately 1 feet. Grafted and stabilized. GEM Avocado

 GEM Avocado, NOT G.E.M. Gloria Tang Sze-wing, the hot singer 😂

 Hass is the King of Avocado, GEM is the princesses of avocado (great-granddaughter). The GEM variety was developed by University of California Riverside researchers and named after a technician that help developing it, initials of Gray E. Martin. The new variety actually was patented and released in 2003.

 Lots of reference shall be made in comparison to Hass as GEM was develop to be better / differentiate / fill in the void.

The Gem avocado tree is a semi-compact, vase shaped tree that bears the fruit mostly in clusters interior in the tree, GEM is also a more consistent producer. Gem avocados hold particularly well on the tree.

 GEM has several of the positive attributes of Hass, including taste, size, color, productivity and seasonality, also matures later than Hass thus extending the season. GEM is described as "a little more oval or egg-shaped than Hass. It has the speckling on the skin. As it ripens, it will turn dark, and a lot of times the speckled lenticels will get a golden color speckle to it." This lenticels is actually pores through which gases are exchanged.

In taste tests conducted by Westfalia Fruit Estates, a South African company marketing GEM worldwide, the avocado variety scored better than Hass in terms of eating quality. Other surveys shows that it's as good as/ even better than Hass. Retail markets varies and in EU & US selling price is at premium compared to Hass due to the lower planted acreage.

Series on Avocado in Malaysia, Reed Avocado

Reed Avocado is described as Reed Avocado, Hass's Rounder and Creamier Cousin.
First question normally being asked, how's the taste? It's rated as Excellent!
Bill Sidnam of the Los Angeles Times characterizes it as "an incredibly rich, buttery flavor.". The texture is buttery, and the flavor is bold, rich and nutty.
The Reed avocado is one of the larger known varieties of avocado. The round fruit can weigh up to 600 gm!. Its thick, green, slightly pebbled skin is easy to peel, and its flesh is a pale golden-yellow. It has a relatively large seed and seed cavity, but its robust size allows it to still carry a substantial amount of edible flesh. 
Second question, how tall is the tree?
Left to nature, it can grow to about 12 M. For Home growers, Reed can be prune down to 2.5 M and still be a good producer. Reed avocado trees are slender and upright.

What is the disadvantage? Reed ripe in Green so it's a bit difficult to tell when it's ripe 😁. Shelve life is short, about 5 days after plucking, but can be extended much longer by refrigerating. Reed store very well in refrigeration, even when cut. For better storage, leave the pit in.
One way to check ripeness is to lightly flick the piece of stem at the end of the fruit. If it falls out, the fruit is ripe. You can double check by pushing a toothpick into the cavity where the stem flicked out. If it goes in without much resistance, the fruit is ripe. Another way is to squeeze the fruit gently. An unripe fruit is hard, a ripe fruit has a little bit of 'give'.

Waste from roots is food for mycorrhiza fungi, waste from mycorrhiza fungi is food for roots.

What Are Mycorrhiza?

“Myco” – “rhiza” literally means “fungus” – “root” and describes the mutually beneficial relationship between the plant and root fungus. These specialized fungi colonize plant roots and extend far into the soil. Mycorrhiza fungal filaments in the soil are truly extensions of root systems and are more effective in nutrient and water absorption than the roots themselves. More than 90 percent of plant species in natural areas form a symbiotic relationship with the beneficial mycorrhiza fungi.

Are They Important?

Mycorrhiza fungi increase the surface absorbing area of roots 100 to a 1,000 times, thereby greatly improving the ability of the plant to access soil resources. Several miles of fungal filaments can be present in less than a thimbleful of soil. Mycorrhiza fungi increase nutrient uptake not only by increasing the surface absorbing area of the roots, but also release powerful enzymes into the soil that dissolve hard-to-capture nutrients, such as organic nitrogen, phosphorus, iron and other “tightly bound” soil nutrients. This extraction process is particularly important in plant nutrition and explains why non-mycorrhiza plants require high levels of fertilization to maintain their health. Mycorrhiza fungi form an intricate web that captures and assimilates nutrients, conserving the nutrient capital in soils.

Do You Need Them?

Undisturbed soils are full of beneficial soil organisms including mycorrhiza fungi. Research indicates, however, many common practices can degrade the mycorrhizae-forming potential of soil. Tillage, removal of topsoil, erosion, site preparation, compaction, fumigation, invasion of weeds, and leaving soils fallow are some of the activities that can reduce or eliminate these beneficial soil fungi. Scientific studies indicate endo mycorrhiza fungal populations are slow to recolonize, unless there is close access to natural areas that can act as a source of mycorrhiza spores to repopulate the affected area. Reintroducing mycorrhiza fungi in areas where they have been lost can dramatically improve plant performance with less water and fertilizer and at a reduced cost.

Avocado Plant Breeding.

I had though of creating a plant breeding program for Avocados as it is close to impossible to obtain quality varieties of Avocado plants locally.

There are lots of questions in my mind. Which is the best variety? Which is the most suitable variety to grow locally. Which variety are most accepted by the local market? Or neighboring countries? Which variety has the longest shelve life? Which variety perform the best in logistic, like packaging, transportation etc and etc.

Avocado Hybridization.

As of last year I though of initiating a breeding program for long term production to produce a hybrid locally that can satisfy all the local needs. A personal Holy Grail of sort for Avocado. This shall takes up a very long time and I don't think I have the resources to even start it.

Avocado Trees In Plant Breeding.

Am shelving this project as I had found a place that is already doing this. They had already accumulated more than 30 years of experience and had already started to release their Hass Hybrid. I don't need to re-invent the wheel. I can just tag on to their research, learn & gain from them. I guess I only have to work on localizing their hybrid. This shall save us tremendous resources. Shall try to initiate contact & communication and hopefully work with them in the near future. Am very grateful to them letting me in to tour their facilities.

Hass Avocado.

The research center is located in a valley of about 640 meters, surrounded by hills of more than 860 meters. They are also blessed with black fertile soil, with water (stream). A comparison to our farm, ranging from 450 to 550 meters with red clayish soil and a stream at the bottom of the foot hill. I guess this should be adaptable and should not post too much of a challenge as we already have Avocados plants growing here, even Hass Avocado (from seeds).

I hope to make more trips here to further my understanding on Avocado and understand how hybridizing is carried out and share with all Avocado plant lovers.

While I was touring their facilities I notice other varieties like Pinkerton, Bacon, Fuerte & etc. Would love to get my hands on these too.

CrowdFunding In Farming, Project Hass Avocado.

We had recently concluded a project to acquire Grafted Hass Avocado plants via crowd funding. Crowd funding as described by Wikipedia

Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, typically via the internet. One early-stage equity expert described it as “the practice of raising funds from two or more people over the internet towards a common Service, Project, Product, Investment, Cause, and Experience”
The crowdfunding model is fueled by three types of actors: the project initiator who proposes the idea and/or project to be funded; individuals or groups who support the idea; and a moderating organization (the "platform") that brings the parties together to launch the idea.

I took on the role of the project initiator, proposing that we come up with a fund, whereby I use this fund for the purpose of acquiring Grafted Hass Avocado plants. I proposed to come up with 10 "share". Each share for a certain amount qualify for 1 plants. Participant are welcomed to take up in more than 1 share.

This project was launched via our Face Book account Avocado & Fig Wholesale. & Avocados Lovers Malaysia. As there were only 10 shares, all were snapped up very quickly. We made it as a first registered, first served. Then followed by a waiting list. As it was a forward project, no funds were collected during the registration.

Arrangements / bookings were all made using my own funds. 2 weeks before departing, I contacted all the participants to transfer in their funds. Yes some could not make it due to various reasons and those on the waiting list were moved forward. Managed to collect all the funding 2 days before departure.

Upon arrival at destination, I made contacted with our supplier. Further arrangement were made, as I need to verify that the products are actually as described. Once it was verified, booking were paid. We then discussed on the packaging / timing of delivery and other logistic. Updated all participants.

D day for delivery, one final inspection, all payment sorted out and packing closed. Had a very smooth home coming. Contacted participants to make arrangement for collection.

Project concluded (almost, 1 participant had not response to the collection advise). Fulfillment done and completed successfully. Congratulation to all the participants as we are the first to acquire Grafted Hass Avocado plants via Crowdfunding.

This project gave us a very good experience and may gear us for bigger projects in the future.
